Although high season for tourism in Costa Rica is from January to April, the gentleman traveler can enjoy Costa Rica almost year round. The time to avoid are the major holidays, which are Christmas, Easter Week, and to a lesser extent the onset of school vacations during the first weeks of January.
The months between May and October bring profuse rain, and coming during the rainy season means packing an umbrella or two. Some prefer this time because hotels can be cheaper. Besides, rain rarely spoils indoor activities. Halloween falls toward the end of rainy season, and for the last several years has become a big event in San Jose and Jaco with girls dressing in costumes.
Avoid Month of December
Late December is a really bad time to plan a trip to Costa Rica. Costa Rican law requires employers to pay an additional month of salary during the month of December. As a result expect long lines at restaurants, streets full of people shopping, and increased crime.
Also, for the most part the girls will run off to party or be with their family. This means there is very little talent in San Jose, and getting a hotel room in Jaco Beach is difficult. Once in Jaco, most of the girls will be ignoring the few foreigners crazy enough to still be in Costa Rica.
Party Continues Into New Year
Things are also a little slow to recover in January because Costa Rican schools give students the month off. Many of the girls are single mothers, and will try to enjoy the time with their families until they feel the economic need to buy school supplies. Expect the nightlife to begin a recovery by mid-January, and be in full swing by the end of the month.
Avoid the Easter Holy Week
The week of Easter can fall anywhere between February and April. Unlike in the United States this holiday is of substantial importance in Latin America.Going to the beach becomes impossible due to the throngs of vacation seekers and San Jose becomes a ghost town. As a general rule the gentlemen traveler should avoid Costa Rica for at least ten days before and after Easter Sunday.
