Confessions of a Caribbean Courtesan by Floralie Neptune is a short book, written by a Dominican sex worker based on her experiences in Sosua.
Floralie explains how she would dress in sexy outfits while still wearing sensible shoes, so she can run and hide from the tourist police.
Especially poignant are her descriptions of a childhood in Haiti, filled with poverty, Voodoo and violence. Despite a humble upbringing, Floralie receives the benefit of a remarkable education, learning French and how to play the piano. She ends up in Sosua after her plans for university in Santiago fall apart.

Described as the sexual rat race, Floralie laments not having much in the way in entertainment in Sosua.
We went out because we wanted to make money. And yet it was also like nightclubbing anywhere in the world. The bars had bright lights, music and dancing. We would meet new acquaintances and the only difference was that they would pay you when you went home with them. It beat sitting at home watching TV.

Floralie always seems to be looking for other options. She makes an attempt to break into the nightlife in Cabarete, but is pushed out by the girls already working there, unfriendly to newcomers. She discards the other option, going south to Boca Chica because that beach town is even “more faded” than Sosua.
Having spent some time on Pedro Clisante, Floralie explains to us all the tricks the girls use in Sosua.
I quickly learned the subtle science of how to catch a man’s eye; how to know how much money to ask for my time. I would study his clothing, mannerisms, and the attention he gave me. I would analyze the drinks he ordered and the style of clothing he wore. If he offered me a drink, I’d choose the most expensive, if he didn’t object I knew I would be able to charge more for my time.

For $2.99 the forty page book is a great read for anyone planning a trip to Sosua or has thought of dating one of the mocha beauties of the northern Dominican coast.
