Let’s face it, if you don’t have an international smartphone and are frequent traveler to Costa Rica or Colombia then you are really putting your hobby at a disadvantage. The list of must have apps, for example Whatsapp, Uber, Easytaxi, Waze, Google Maps and Translate keeps getting longer. Having a smartphone with a working prepaid line means getting in touch easier and faster with your regular girls. Getting lost is much less likely and you can just forget just about every kind of taxi hassle or scam when you have Uber and Easytaxi.
Of course then there is also the need to surf the Internet and check email. Having to depend on WiFi for a US phone in airplane mode isn’t always reliable, and leaves you without an Internet connection when you are out and about, and need it the most. And, if your US phone is a high end iPhone or Android then you really shouldn’t risk it on the streets of Medellin.

One solution is to get an unlocked phone just for International travel. The option offers the potential advantage of a different personality on social media for your hobby, disconnected from your real name and identity. It also means that you can Whatsapp your girls just before and during your trip, then tune them out after the trip. Until recently, however it had been difficult to justify the expense of an unlocked phone just for play.
