Low season has not been kind and the girls are hustling hard for dollars in the Gringo Gulch. Closed are several long-time expat bars, and the Hotel Presidente isn’t allowing local women to visit with foreign gentlemen in their rooms.
The Del Rey Hotel and Key Largo Bar are still in full swing. But, next door the Monkey Bar closed. An attempt to revive the New York bar as the Wild Cherry, didn’t work out.
There are also no more signs of life from the Speak Easy Bar, located in the Secret Mansion. Marketing for the multi-million dollar hotel and restaurant is non-existent. A block the Hotel Britannia is deserted with a “For Sale” sign.
Earlier this year the Hotel Presidente erected a sign on their restaurant that said they could not no longer earn a profit because the government has raised taxes too high. Telling over a decade of frequent visitors to take a hike with their hookers didn’t work out. Backpackers and nature tourists aren’t paying $100 a night for the same rooms.
