Local currency in the Dominican Republic is the peso (DOP), which is often abbreviated as RD$. Each peso is divided into 100 centavos or cents, and the smallest bill is the 20 peso note. In 2010, a new 20 peso note was issued on a plastic polymer. However, at this time the rest of the currency is still paper.
