Halloween has for six years been the classic example of turning lemons into lemonade. It’s an event that fills hotels in downtown San Jose to capacity at the height of the rainy season. While the rest of the tourism industry is praying they can hang for one more low season, hotels that cater to gentleman travelers are doing well and selling drinks to both the locals and tourists.

Girls in Cabarete Face Stiff Competition and Extortion

Common complaint among the girls working in the Dominican Republic is they face stiff resistance along the northern coast to Cabarete. In this video a girl from the Dominican Republic explains that a high ranking officer with the tourist police (POLITUR) demanded 10,000 pesos (about $250) or sexual favors in order to ply her trade in upscale Cabarete.

Tourist police present the biggest challenge among prostitutes in the Dominican Republic. In her book Confessions of a Caribbean Courtesan, Floralie Neptune explains she was kept out of Cabarete by the girls who were already working there that did not want more competition, coming from Sosúa. She also has numerous encounters with the tourist police.

The drug eliminates the free will of the victim, but keeps them in a lucid and mobile state while they withdraw money from the ATM, liquidate bank accounts or empty their homes of possessions. They retain little memory of the event after handing over everything they have in the world to strangers.
